The bride's dress is generally the most expensive item after catering, however if you buy your dress on sale or buy a prom or party dress you will end up spending much less than if you go to a high end bridal shop.

Plan on having your reception at a friend or family member's house and you can forgo spending money on a hall or hotel ballroom. Summer weddings in a garden or on the beach are also less expensive.

Having only one or two bridal attendants will also save you some money especially if you are willing to have them wear something they already have in their wardrobe or they are willing to buy a new party dress for the occasion. To save even more money the groom and his attendants can always wear a suit that they already have or rent one which is a lot less expensive then buying a new suit.

Catering can be a family affair with everyone pitching in to make the food. Having a buffet of appetizers and sweets is far less expensive than having a full dinner or lunch. Potluck is another way to go and a great way to get family and friends involved in your wedding plans.

With regards to invitations there are two ways to go. You can make your own or use blank cards and print the invitation using your personal computer and printer. If you want to save even more money you can send your guests an invitation through email or use an online service such as Evite.

Making your own table centerpieces can also greatly reduce the cost of your wedding. If you have any creative friends this might be a good time to enroll them in helping you out. Ask them if they will make them for you if you supply the materials.

You can save more money on photography if you give your guests disposable cameras or ask a friend who takes great pictures if they will be your official photographer for the day.

You may not want to make your own wedding cake but you just might have someone in your family who is a great baker and they would love to give you your cake as a wedding gift.

Flowers can be very expensive but there are a couple of ways to save money here too. You can always raid a friend or family member's garden or check out the corner grocery stores that sells flowers as they often can provide flower arrangements that are less expensive than a florist shop.
